Member Profile - Geoff Horvath

Geoff Horvath has been a member of RCWW for 20 years.  He recently retired after 23 years with the Navy where he did telecommunications.  He joined Rotary at the suggestion of a friend, and wanted to give back to the community after feeling supported by the "folks back home" while he was in the Navy.  Geoff has been very active in RCWW as past president, member of the Hawaii  Rotary Youth Foundation, is now president of the Rotary Foundation, and is our esteemed newsletter editor.  A little known fact about him is that he gets up at 3:00am each morning (even in retirement!) to study the bible, and enjoys aerobic activities like gardening, hiking, tennis, swimming, and vacuuming/mopping.

Please visit our regular meetings at noon on Thursdays at Dot's in Wahiawa and meet Geoff in person!

RCWW Marches On In 2019 Wahiawa Veterans Day Parade!

The Rotary Club of Wahiawa had the honor of marching in the Wahiawa Lions Club sponsored  73rd Veteran's Day Parade! It was a moving experience this year, because we saw so many more Veterans in the crowds of people. More than in the past.  We were also very privileged to meet and shake hands with a WWII Veteran.  We handed out American Flags, that were made in AMERICA, and waved to the spectators. Also present were elementary schools in the Wahiawa/Schofield/Wheeler area, high school Bands from the Wahiawa and Honolulu areas, ROTC units from multiple Oahu high schools, VIPs, and vehicles. All members had a blast!  See you next year!

Rotarians in the Community

On Saturday, August 24th, District 5000 Rotarians came together yet again to donate time and resources to Kahauiki Village, an affordable plantation-style community for homeless families located at the end of the freeway near Sand Island.   A call went out to Rotarians from Past District Governor Nalani Finn and Rotarian Allen Kamemoto for help purchasing "outfitting kits" -- everyday toiletries, such as toilet paper, diswashing liquid, cleaning supplies, etc. -- for 30 new households at Kahauiki.  The RC of Mililani Sunrise and Wahiawa-Waialua donated two kits.  This short video, put togther by Past President Josh Laguana of the RC of Hickam-Pearl Harbor, shows the Rotarians making deliveries, including Lilette Subedi from the Rotary Club of Wahiawa-Waialua, and all, as always, having fun.

Saving lives in Ghana

What is it like taking a large team to Africa?  It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.

A highlight for the team was greeting the chief of Sagadugu. The team got excited about buying goats and food for children in the villages where I support eight churches. It was good to see the pastors of most of the eight churches, and I had to explain that we were just passing through on our way to Bolgatanga.
